Letterbox

Letterbox is a plugin for Apple's Mail.app that takes advantage of your widescreen monitor.

Letterbox is a mod that turns Mail’s window into a widescreen one - perfect for displays like my MacBook Pro’s

It rearranges the interface into three vertical columns – so the message pane is to the right of the message list, rather than below. You'll probably need at least 1280 and perhaps 1440 horizontal pixels for this layout to work well for you.

  Monolingual

Monolingual is a program for removing unnecessary language resources from Mac OS X
in order to reclaim several hundred megabytes of disk space.

If you want to free up a couple of gigabytes from your hard drive, you best bet is by deleting languages you don’t use for your OS. This app does exactly that with ease.

It requires at least Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) and also works on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) I don't know about you, but I use my computer in only one (human) language — English.
And I'm willing to bet that you do too, albeit perhaps not English.
So why do you have a bunch of localization files for the Mac OS X operating system
filling up your hard drive? Enter Monolingual — a handy utility for reclaiming your
space for more useful things… like international mp3 files, email or whatever you like.

  The Unarchiver

The Unarchiver is a much more capable replacement for "BOMArchiveHelper.app", the built-in archive unpacker program in Mac OS X.

The Unarchiver is designed to handle many more formats than BOMArchiveHelper, and to better fit in with the design of the Finder. It can also handle filenames in foreign character sets, created with non-English versions of other operating systems. I personally find it useful for opening Japanese archives, but it should handle many other languages just as well.

It is very simple to use and install - simply copy it into your Applications folder or whereever you prefer, and then set archive filetypes to open using it. This can either be done the usual way, or by double-clicking the icon to show The Unarchiver's preferences.

Supported file formats include Zip, Tar-GZip, Tar-BZip2, Rar, 7-zip, LhA, StuffIt and many other more or less obscure formats. Support for so many formats is achieved by using the libxad unarchiving library.

The Unarchiver requires Mac OS X 10.3.9. There is a Google Code page for The Unarchiver, where you can report and track bugs.

Blender

Blender is the free open source 3D content creation suite, available for all major operating systems under the GNU General Public License.

Download The Gimp

The Gimp

Impressive fully featured open source photo editor.

As good as the awesome 'Photoshop' but FREE - the best description is given by Wikipedia rather than the GIMP download site

Read about it here

Not for the faint hearted though, requires some learning (as does Photoshop) but if you're serious about photo editing - don't miss this!

  NeoOffice

NeoOffice is a full-featured set of office applications (including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and drawing programs) for Mac OS X. Based on the OpenOffice.org office suite.

NeoOffice has integrated dozens of native Mac features and can import, edit, and exchange files with other popular office programs such as Microsoft Office.

Released as free, open source software under the GNU General Public License (GPL), NeoOffice is fully functional and stable enough for everyday use. The software is actively developed, so improvements and small updates are made available on a regular basis.

  Punakea

Punakea is a little app trying to help you cope with the day-to-day struggle of managing your files.

Designed to complement Spotlight, it allows you to tag your files and bookmarks, freeing you of the strict hierarchy of the Finder's folder structure.

What are tags? A "tag" is like a keyword. Tags can help you to group files which have something in common.

Why should I use tags? Well, first of all, you can add as many tags as you like to a file, instead of having to go for a single folder. This has a nice side-effect: By assigning multiple tags to a file, you relate them to one another, which greatly improves your browsing experience - all the related tags are shown, as soon as you select a single one.
Then there is another thing, which will be especially interesting for the GTD crowd: tags can not only be used to describe a files meaning, but also to give the files a status - like todo, priority and the likes. To make it short: Tags give you more freedom in organizing your data!

  Scrivener Gold

Scrivener Gold is a freeware release of an early beta version of Scrivener.

Writers of all kinds should find Scrivener Gold useful for maintaining and organising writing and research.

Scrivener Gold has evolved a lot since this beta - the interface is much prettier and more intuitive, and the feature-set, whilst generally the same, has been refined and much improved. Scrivener Gold is missing the niceties you would expect from a finished application (such as state-saving) and may well have a few minor bugs lurking around, but it is nonetheless a fully-functional piece of software that writers of all kinds should find useful for maintaining and organising writing and research.

Note: Unsupported software; untested on Leopard - Requires Mac OS X Tiger (10.4) - Universal for both Intel and PPC

  Sidenote

Sidenote tries to catch the “Stickies” spirit but in the form of a multi-document drawer that will hide in the corner of your screen (left or right)

You can use it to take all your daily notes, include images and easily modify text color and font. Sidenote will automatically expand so that you will be able to drag into it any picture, text clipping or pdf file from the finder or your favorite application. Sporting notes auto-saving, you’ll never have to save your notes. Sidenote will handle that for you. You can also print them or export them to rtf.

  Miscellaneous
  ipodbackup

iPodBackup is a shell script-turned-application (via Platypus) that backs up your home folder to your iPod on Mac OS X using the open source backup utility rsync. Combine it with Do Something When to have fully automated incremental backups to your iPod, for free!

You can customize a list of items to be excluded by simply dragging-and-dropping them onto the app. By default, the Music folder, as well as certain cache folders are skipped, in order to prevent duplicating your music and because caches are a kind of stupid thing to backup.

A note for first-time users: The first backup can take quite a while, especially if you use an encrypted disk image! Subsequent backups will be much faster, as only files that have changed will be copied over.

  ClearDock

ClearDock removes the semi-transparent white background from the Dock so the Dock icons are "floating" on top of your desktop picture. Additionally

It can change the colors of application triangles and of the Dock background to customize your desktop!

* Changes white Dock background color.
* Changes the applications triangles color.
